01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Early in the morning, along a residential street in Katsushika Ward's Nishi-Mizumoto, lights flicker on and the smell of freshly baked dough fills the air. Yazawa Seipanten is a neighborhood bakery retaining the nostalgic warmth of the Showa era, long embraced by nearby residents.

The breads displayed in the front glass showcase are known for their moist, tender crumb with generous moisture. Offerings include everyday white shokupan loaves with a gentle natural sweetness, raisin bread packed with fruit, and a distinctive melonpan that conceals smooth white bean paste beneath its crisp biscuit crust. Elongated koppe-pan rolls can be spread to order with peanut cream, striking an appealing contrast between the airy roll, sweet filling, and faint hint of salt.

Savory bakes suited for breakfast or a casual lunch are equally abundant. Choices range from croquette rolls and corn-mayonnaise buns scented with onion to substantial sausage buns and curry bread, all grounded in straightforward, unpretentious flavors. Sweeter options like plump anpan and sugar-dusted an-doughnuts round out the display at modest prices that make spontaneous stops easy.

Chatting with the baker at the counter while seeing what has just come out of the oven is part of the small-shop experience. All items are sold exclusively for takeaway, and because the shop opens around 6:30 and closes once everything sells out, arriving early offers the best chance of securing favored loaves.
